Considering we’d only gone down part of one hallway, I was curious about what else the castle, for lack of a better word, held.

“So we got to see the armory-slash-training room and the potions lab. What else is there to see?” I asked. “I mean, we don’t have time now, but is there much more worth seeing?”

Devin grinned at me. “You have no idea. There’s a stable, but I’m not going to tell you what they keep there; I don’t want to ruin the surprise. There’s a huge practice field in the courtyard, which is also filled with trees that have peaches the size of grapefruits. There are, of course, kitchens, and a resident wing where we can stay or where guests can crash. There’s a huge common room with a giant flat-screen TV … I could go on and on. There are also restricted rooms that hold cursed items that the academy has recovered, and another with valuables that are warded so heavily that a team of witches or demons or even angels couldn’t break the wards.”

“I know this is gonna sound totally hickish,” Emma said, “But was Brigit a Fae? I thought so, but I’ve never met one before.”

Devin nodded. “Yes. She and Lilith are both Fae.”

I thought back to Lilith’s appearance. Her hair was short but cut in a way that covered her ears. Still, she’d tucked it behind them, and her ears had been round like mine.

“I know what you’re thinking,” Devin said as we entered the library. “When she’s not at the academy, she glamors her ears so they look human. She may have had them glamored today, too. I didn’t notice. She can’t hide her eyes, though.” She hummed in thought. “Or maybe she can, I suppose, but just doesn’t bother. Humans have all sorts of colored eyes, so she can pull it off.”

There was no sign of Stu as we passed through the room and back to the portal, and I was surprised to feel a little disappointed. I was used to having a sarcastic, booze-swilling animal in my life, and he’d been sorta like a little breath of home. I’d never tell Max that, though. Or Stu, either, for that matter. I had my doubts that he’d appreciate being compared to a talking ass anymore than my smart alack donkey would appreciate knowing I’d thought of him when I’d run into a talking monkey. Probably better just not to share the info with either of them.

“He probably sneaked off to have a smoke on the balcony,” Devin said, shaking her head. “Lilith rescued him from a research facility way back in the sixties, and he was a two-pack-a-day smoker. He’s cut way back, but I’d love to see him quit altogether.”

I had to wonder what it said about me that I didn’t find anything odd about that revelation, but I figured in the scheme of weird things I’d seen that day, Stu was pretty much the marker for normal.

“So is he just a regular talking monkey then?” I asked.
